“Case Is Being Actively Reviewed By USCIS”: what it means
An officer is working on your case, or the case was touched in the system. It is not a decision.

What this status means
USCIS does not publish a definition of this message. What it does say about the online status is that it shows the last action taken on your case, and that not every action USCIS takes changes the message you see.
In practice the message shows while a case is with USCIS for review. Many people see it more than once on the same case, because later activity on the file can post it again with a new date.
It does not mean an approval or a denial is about to happen, and it does not mean anything is wrong.
What it means for your form
- I-485 (green card)
- It does not tell you whether you will be interviewed. USCIS interviews every adjustment applicant unless it waives the interview, so the next message can be an interview notice, a request for evidence or a decision.
- N-400 (citizenship)
- The application is with USCIS. The messages to watch for next are an interview notice, a request for evidence and a decision. After an approval comes the oath ceremony: you become a citizen when you take the oath, not when the application is approved.
- I-130 (family petition)
- The petition is in review. Approval of an I-130 is one step rather than the last one: what follows depends on whether your relative applies for a green card in the United States or for an immigrant visa abroad.
What usually happens next
- The case could be approved, USCIS could send a request for evidence, or it could be scheduled for an interview, depending on the form.
- Some cases show this status for a long time with no further change.

What does “Case Is Being Actively Reviewed” mean after an interview?
It means the case is still open after the interview and USCIS has recorded more activity on it. It is not a decision either way.
The result, or a request for more evidence, comes by mail, and the online status normally changes when it is sent. If you were asked for anything at the interview, that request says how and by when to send it.
How long does “Case Is Being Actively Reviewed” last?
USCIS does not publish a time for this message, and how long a case shows it varies by form and by office.
The useful comparison is USCIS’s published processing time for your form at the office handling your case. USCIS does not research cases that are still within that time; once yours is outside it, you can submit an inquiry.
Why does my case keep going back to “Actively Reviewed”?
Not every action USCIS takes changes the words on your status page, and later activity on the file can post the same message again with a new date. The same words with a new date are common and not, by themselves, a sign of a problem.
What changes the picture is a different message: an interview notice, a request for evidence or a decision.
Is “Case Is Being Actively Reviewed” good or bad?
Neither. It appears on cases that are later approved and on cases that later get a request for evidence, so on its own it does not point either way.
