I-751 processing time: what to expect while you wait
USCIS publishes the current processing time for Form I-751 on its Check Case Processing Times page, and it changes with workload. The more important number for your day-to-day life is fixed: your receipt notice extends your green card for 48 months past its expiration date.

Where to find the current processing time
- Open USCIS’s Check Case Processing Times page.
- Choose Form I-751 and the office shown on your receipt notice.
- Read the figure USCIS shows. It describes most cases, not a promise for yours.

The 48-month extension
Since January 2023, USCIS’s I-751 receipt notice extends the validity of your conditional green card for 48 months beyond the date on the card. USCIS’s announcement says that, presented with your expired card, the notice is evidence of continued status and “you remain authorized to work and travel for 48 months from the expiration date.”
If your case is still pending after those 48 months and you need proof of status, USCIS says to call the Contact Center at 800-375-5283. Planning to be abroad for a year or more? USCIS reminds conditional residents to apply for a reentry permit (Form I-131) before leaving.
What happens, in order
- Receipt. USCIS sends the receipt notice. Keep it with your green card. Your status shows Case Was Received.
- Biometrics, if needed. USCIS mails an appointment notice.
- Review, and maybe an interview. USCIS may ask you to attend an interview and mails a notice if so. It may also send a Request For Additional Evidence.
- Decision. If approved: New Card Is Being Produced, then Card Was Mailed To Me.
If your I-751 is denied
USCIS mails a decision explaining why, and may issue a Notice to Appear before an immigration judge. You can ask the judge to review the I-751 denial during removal proceedings, where DHS has to prove the denial was proper. If the judge orders removal, you have 30 days to appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals with Form EOIR-26.
Getting divorced while it is pending
If you filed jointly and are now separated or in divorce proceedings, USCIS says it will send a request for evidence asking for the final divorce or annulment decree and a statement that you want the joint petition treated as a waiver.
