“Biometrics Appointment Was Scheduled”: what it means
USCIS has booked your fingerprint and photo appointment. The notice with the date, time and place is on its way.
Checked against USCIS guidance on October 17, 2026. The sources are listed at the end of this page.
What this status means
USCIS has scheduled a biometric services appointment for you at an Application Support Center (ASC). There, staff take your fingerprints and photo, which USCIS uses to confirm your identity and run the required background and security checks.
USCIS does not publish a separate explanation of this message. The appointment notice, Form I-797C, is what tells you the date, time and location.
It is not an interview. Nothing about the merits of your case is decided at the appointment.
What usually happens next
- The appointment notice arrives by mail.
- After you attend, the status usually changes to “Case Was Updated To Show Fingerprints Were Taken”, and the case goes back to waiting for review.
What to do now
- Read the notice for the date, time and address, and plan to arrive on time.
- Bring the appointment notice (Form I-797C) and valid photo identification, such as a passport, green card or driver’s license.
- If you cannot go, reschedule through your USCIS online account at least 12 hours before the appointment, or through the USCIS Contact Center. USCIS will not reschedule an appointment that has already been rescheduled twice or more, is less than 12 hours away, or has passed.
- If the notice has not arrived and your online status says it was sent more than 14 days ago, contact USCIS.
What happens at a biometrics appointment?
Staff at the Application Support Center check your appointment notice and photo ID, then take your fingerprints and photo. The point is identity and background checks, which run alongside the rest of your case.
What if I miss my biometrics appointment?
If you miss it without asking to reschedule or updating your address in time, USCIS can treat your application as abandoned. If you have missed it, contact USCIS as soon as you can rather than waiting for a new notice.
Why do I need biometrics again if I gave them before?
Some forms always need new biometrics. USCIS does not reuse photos for an N-400, N-600, I-90 or I-485 and says those forms require new biometrics, including a new photo, so those applications get an appointment even if you have been fingerprinted before.
