“Case Was Denied”: what it means
USCIS decided against the application. The denial letter explains why and what options exist.
What this status means
An officer has refused the application or petition. USCIS mails a decision letter that gives the reasons.
What usually happens next
- The letter says whether you can appeal or ask USCIS to reopen or reconsider, and the deadline for doing so. For many decisions that is Form I-290B, usually within 30 days (33 if the decision was mailed).
- Some denials can’t be appealed, but you may be able to file again.
What to do now
- Read the decision letter in full as soon as it arrives. Deadlines are short.
- Talk to an immigration attorney or accredited representative before deciding what to do, especially if a denial affects your lawful status.
