“Notice Was Returned To USCIS As Undeliverable”: what it means
Something USCIS mailed came back. Until they hold a working address, nothing else they send will arrive.
What this status means
A notice, decision or card that USCIS posted was returned by the postal service. The usual causes are an address USCIS was never given, an expired mail-forwarding order, or a name that is not on the mailbox.
A forwarding order filed only with the postal service does not cover most USCIS mail, so an address changed there alone still leaves USCIS posting to the old one.
What usually happens next
- USCIS holds the returned item. It is not sent again on its own — a working address has to reach them first.
- Deadlines generally keep running while a notice sits undelivered, which is what makes this message worth acting on quickly rather than waiting.
What to do now
- Update your address with USCIS itself, for every case you have pending, not only with the postal service.
- Check that your name as filed is on the mailbox or buzzer where your post arrives.
- Ask for the item to be sent again through the USCIS e-request for mail that was not delivered.
